Strathclyde Institute for Genealogical Studies
Spring Genealogy Classes & Talks

Join us this spring for an exciting range of classes and talks brought to you by Strathclyde Institute for Genealogical Studies. Take a look at what we have coming up…

Intermediate Scottish Family History Research Course – 5th & 6th May. Join us on-campus for this 2-day immersive course, perfect for intermediate level researchers. Enjoy talks from prominent Scottish genealogists and educators, covering research techniques and using a variety of Scottish records. In-course exercises will provide hands-on learning to embed the skills and knowledge covered. Find out more and book online!

✨ Sailing to Philadelphia: Scottish sources for tracing emigrant ancestors (online talk) – 16th April 18.00-19.15 BST. Discover family members who have left Scotland, and the destinations where they eventually settled. Rather than looking at the obvious passenger lists, it will cover less well-used records such as poor relief applications, estate papers, and gravestones. Can’t attend live? All participants will receive access to the recording for two weeks after the event. Find out more and book online!

✨ Early Modern Scottish Family History Research Course (online course) – 28th April, 5th & 12th May 18.30-20.00 BST. Tracing and identifying your ancestors in Scotland before 1800 can be very challenging, especially when trying to find those who migrated elsewhere. This course will provide an overview of various records which may contain useful information and will also outline records which do not exist for the period 1600-1800. All participants will receive access to the recording for two weeks after the event.  Find out more and book online!

“Escape to the Past – Family History Retreat Glasgow 2026”

Have you ever imaged getting away from the noise of everyday life and immersing yourself in family history?  Then Escape to the Past with us.  Our retreats are part learning, part adventure and part pure research joy.  If you are craving focused research time, expert guidance, and a chance to reconnect with your passion for family history, then the opportunity is here.  Run by Mia Bennett (AGRA Associate) and Fiona Brooker, the next Escape to the Past retreat is taking place on the weekend of 27/28 June in central Glasgow.  In advance, an introductory session via Zoom lets you meet the group and start identifying the family history topic you want to work on during your focused time – whether it be a specific brickwall, writing up the story of an ancestor, working out a set of DNA matches or just taking stock and developing a research plan for the future – the choice is yours.  Then there is the two whole days of genealogy fun in Glasgow.  Teaching is a combination of one!

All your food is included and there is a special activity on the Saturday evening.  The cost is £300 or quote FHS2026 to get a £10 discount if you book before 18 April.  If this has you keen to know more, head to https://www.miagenealogy.com/escape-to-the-past-glasgow-2026/ and sign up to the newsletter.  You will then receive all the information about the Glasgow retreat.  We look forward to escaping with you in Glasgow
